Mind is full of mindlessness. Mind confuses and makes one miserable. Mind can be freed from thoughts by observing the breath and the body, by meditation. Although, Music and Dance can’t match meditation they too to some extent liberate the mind. Dance when performed with complete awareness is nothing but movement meditation, Dance with awareness of the breath and the body, Dance naturally as if no one is watching.

We are all Natural Dancers

Body has a rhythm sense. Just observe that we walk in a particular rhythm which is involuntary. Nobody taught us to keep steps at equal intervals of time and distance. Still we manage to do that all the time. So, walking can be considered as the simplest form of dancing. Respiration and heartbeat also follow a rhythm.

Get the rhythm sense first

Listen to some House music with complete concentration, ear phones will be of great help. Start counting the beats 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Clapping will make it interesting. Listening to Metronome can also help one cultivate beat sense

The Walk

Once you are able to count the beats, start walking. You need to time your walk in such a way that your foot stomps (To tread or trample heavily or violently) on the ground on the beat. You can start by stomping on the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th beat. Once you get a hang of this, try moving the opposite hand while keeping the same hand stationary. For example, when you stomp your right foot, bring your left hand up and point. You can be creative and use your neck or include some hip movements to make it more presentable.

Warming up

Warming up with aerobic and stretching exercises before dancing is a must. Choose an peppy tune for warm up sessions. Start with body Isolations and make sure that neck, shoulders, Chest, hips, legs, feet are all worked.

First steps

Step – When you keep your foot on the ground on the beat, it is considered as a step.

Tap – when the toe touches the ground (without touching the arch and heel) on the beat it’s a tap.
